'Divas' interview with Gabrielle Meit

Gabrielle Meit currently studies Photography at SVA. She looks at life with an open and creative eye. Gabrielle uses bold, bright, colours throughout her photography, thus looking at the world in a very positive light. Gabrielle Meit took time out of her day to answer a few questions to SANT about her work, and life:

From where do you draw your information and inspiration?

I draw my information and inspiration from the world around me, the things that are in my life, as well as my opinions and the opinions of others. Many things inspire me in the everyday, and I do my best to surround myself with the things that do, and relish in them.

How do you come up with concepts/ideas that no one else has?

I come up with my concepts and ideas the way that many others do as well, by looking inward. I really explore the things that make me who I am, and I try and understand the things I do not find important.

What drew you to Photography and what do you love the most about it?

What drew me into photography was my love for all things art and creating. When I was a lot younger, it seemed like the natural step: something new to try instead of painting. I immediately fell in love with the medium; I loved its ability to be able to retain a moment, as well as its ability to be both a very truthful medium, and completely false at the same time. Photography has the ability to show many truths, as well as to show something of pure fabrication.

What do you hate about it?

What i hate is how people can be so close minded, they never try to understand someone else. Its very common to judge based on pre conceived notions that we were raised with. I think the best quality a person can have is being open minded. Sometimes that person you judge harshly from across a room could be one of the greatest people you will ever meet, but you will never have the opportunity to know.

How do you combine art and photography together?

I combine art & photography together by staying true to myself. The only way to create an image that means something is to put your whole heart into it, and I stay true to that with every image that i create. It is your perspective and knowledge that changes something from being just a photograph to a piece of art.

How and what do you do, to inspire others?

I hope that I inspire others just by being true to myself. I believe in the arts and will always support others to pursue them, and to make sure they are passionate about anything that they decide.
